# Wide area network (WAN)

View address information for an Ethernet WAN connection.

**Wide area network (WAN)** displays address information for a configured Ethernet WAN connection.

An Ethernet WAN connection uses port 4 on the Hera 604 to reach an external network. Depending on the mode selected in the Network Connection wizard, it can be the router's only connection, a backup for the mobile connection, or the connection that the mobile network backs up.

The page displays:

| Field | Example or possible values | Description |
| ------------------ | -------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Address assignment | `STATIC` or `DHCP` | Determines how the Hera 604 obtains its Ethernet WAN address. `STATIC` means the address is configured manually. `DHCP` means the upstream network assigns it automatically. |
| WAN IP address | `---` or an IP address | Address assigned to the router's Ethernet WAN interface. `---` means an address is not currently assigned. |
| Net mask | `---` or a net mask | Identifies the network associated with the WAN address. `---` means a net mask is not currently assigned. |

{% hint style="info" %}
Values appear on this page only when an Ethernet interface is configured to connect to an external network. If the router connects over the mobile network only, see [Mobile network](/hera604/configure/system-status/mobile-network.md).
{% endhint %}

Set up an Ethernet WAN connection using the [Network Connection wizard](/hera604/configure/setup-wizards/set-up-the-connection.md). Once configured, adjust it on [WAN IP address](/hera604/configure/basic-settings/wide-area-network-wan.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.eseye.com/hera604/configure/system-status/wide-area-network-wan.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
